Lunch at Fajã dos Padres begins with getting down the cliff. The restaurant sits on the coastal property below Quinta Grande, reached by cable car rather than by driving to its door. Treat the descent, the meal and the return as three parts of the same outing, and it becomes a much more relaxed way to spend a day on Madeira’s south coast.
Book the table and settle access
Start with the restaurant’s own booking information. Tell the team the size of your party, the date and any dietary requirements. A table reservation does not, by itself, tell you what access ticket to buy or how much time to allow at the upper station.
The operator’s access page describes a cable-car descent of around three and a half minutes. That is cabin travel, not the full door-to-table journey. Leave room for arrival, ticket arrangements and making your way across the property instead of treating the ride time as your entire margin.

Kitchen hours matter more than the bar’s closing time
When checked on 15 October 2026, the restaurant published kitchen service from 12:00 to 15:30 outside summer, with the bar open from 10:00 to 18:00. Its summer kitchen hours were listed as 12:30 to 16:00. Check the schedule for your date directly: arriving while the bar is still open does not necessarily mean lunch is still being served.
The operator’s visiting page listed 10:00–18:00 for the rest of the year and a longer summer period. Establish the final ascent when you arrive. You want your last coffee to be a choice, rather than a hurried calculation about reaching the station.
Let the property give the meal some context
The restaurant describes fish dishes alongside produce from the estate’s organic growing areas. Ask what comes from the property in the meal you are ordering; it is a more interesting question than assuming every ingredient was grown a few metres from your table.
A guided estate visit is another way to get that context. The operator distinguishes a visit from a visit with fruit tasting. Choose the format deliberately and ask how it fits around lunch. Reading our Madeira fruit guide beforehand can help you recognise names, but it does not replace the explanation of what is growing on this particular estate.
Keep the rest of the day light
Fajã dos Padres is a place to visit in its own right, not a restaurant car park beside the Cabo Girão skywalk. Both are on the south-western side of Funchal, but they have separate access arrangements. Give lunch enough room before adding another timed stop.
For navigation, use the cable car’s upper station at the end of Estrada Padre António Dinis Henriques. Our driving guide explains why the final approach and parking deserve attention. Once your table and return are settled, there is little reason to turn the meal into another race around the coast.
