Lido or Ponta Gorda? Choosing a Swimming Complex in Funchal

by | Guides

Swimming pools at the Lido bathing complex in Funchal in 2016

Lido and Ponta Gorda are bathing complexes along Funchal’s western seafront. Both combine pools with the coastal setting, so the choice need not start with which photograph looks bluer. Think about the walk from your accommodation, the facilities your group uses and whether you want the pool, access to the sea or a place to spend several hours.

Two named entrances along the same seafront

The official Lido listing describes two saltwater pools, including one for children, a solarium and supervised facilities. Its accessibility information includes lifts, ramps and amphibious chairs.

Ponta Gorda’s listing describes adult and children’s saltwater pools, a tidal pool and facilities including changing rooms, first aid and rentals. These are two separate complexes; using “Lido” as a broad hotel-area name can obscure which entrance someone actually means.

Choose by the practical difference for your group

ConsiderationWhat to establish
Getting thereThe route from your accommodation to the specific entrance
Time in the waterWhich pools and sea access are open that day
ComfortChanging facilities and any seating or shade you need
AccessibilityThe whole route and availability of assistance/equipment
CostAdmission plus the rentals you actually intend to use

A shorter walk with the facilities you need may matter more than a small difference in entry price. For someone planning a quick swim, easy arrival can decide it. For a family staying most of the day, changing arrangements, breaks and shade can carry more weight.

Ask what the ticket includes

Use the current tariff from Frente MarFunchal, which manages the complexes, rather than a price copied from an old travel article. Establish whether a sun lounger or parasol is extra, which concession applies to your group and whether leaving and re-entering is allowed on the ticket you choose.

This guide does not turn an older tariff PDF into a current quote. At the entrance, compare the total for your intended visit. A modest admission figure tells you little if you add equipment rentals for several people.

An open complex does not promise open sea access

Read the day’s signs and follow the staff’s instructions. Pool operation and permission to enter the sea are separate questions, especially when there is swell. A photograph of someone swimming, whether from yesterday or ten years ago, cannot decide today’s conditions for you.

For the rest of the outing, choose somewhere nearby from our brunch guide if it fits the actual opening hours. Our accommodation-area guide explains the Lido area’s relationship to central Funchal. If you specifically want volcanic natural pools in the north, Porto Moniz is a separate day-planning decision, not another entrance along this promenade.
