The Monte toboggan ride finishes in Livramento, on the hillside above central Funchal. It does not deliver you to the waterfront. Knowing that before you set off makes the whole outing easier: you can enjoy the descent without having to work out the next part while standing beside the road.
What the ride actually is
A wicker body sits on wooden runners, with two carreiros controlling its progress down the road. Their white clothing and straw hats are familiar from Madeira photographs, but the craft also has a transport history. Visit Madeira traces its use to the nineteenth century and describes a route of about two kilometres from Monte to Livramento, taking roughly ten minutes.
That estimate describes the ride. It does not include getting to Monte, waiting to buy a ticket, queueing or continuing from the finish. If you have a lunch reservation or a ship to catch, put those parts into the plan separately.
The featured photograph dates from around 1935 and shows the tradition’s history in Monte. It is not a record of today’s ticket office, vehicles or operating arrangements.
Three services that are often confused
| Service | Purpose | Question before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Transport to Monte | Getting uphill to the area | Where does it drop you, and is it one-way? |
| Carro de cesto ride | The descent to Livramento | What is the fare for your group and today’s sale procedure? |
| Transport after the ride | Continuing from Livramento | Is a vehicle waiting, and where will it take you? |
A tour photograph showing a basket does not establish that the fare is included. Read the inclusions and ask specifically whether the booking pays for the descent or only brings you to its starting point. Current fares should come from the Carreiros do Monte operator; this guide does not reproduce a third-party price as an official tariff.
Plan the finish as carefully as the start
If a driver will collect you, agree the Livramento meeting point and what happens if the queue delays the ride. If you intend to walk, inspect the route to your actual destination: a downhill line on a map says little about pavements, road crossings or how your knees will feel afterwards.
A round-trip cable-car ticket also needs thought. Finishing a toboggan descent below Monte means you are no longer at the cable car’s upper station. Decide whether you want to return uphill or continue towards town before choosing your ticket combination.
Build a Monte visit around the parts you want
The toboggan and a garden can share a day, but they are separate experiences. Our Monte Palace and Botanical Garden comparison explains the garden choice. If woven craft interests you beyond the ride, Camacha’s wickerwork gives that story its own space.
For a day relying on public transport, start with Madeira without a car. Then settle the current service hours with the relevant operators. You do not need to do every Monte attraction to make the journey uphill worthwhile.
