The Achadas da Cruz cable car takes you down to Fajã da Quebrada Nova, an agricultural strip beneath the cliffs in north-west Madeira. The descent gets the attention, but the decision that matters is how much of your day to give the place below. Buy the right journey, establish your return and leave yourself time to look beyond the cable-car cabin.
A working landscape at the bottom of the cliff
From above, the divisions between cultivated plots are part of the view. At ground level, they are someone’s working ground. Porto Moniz municipality describes vineyards and vegetables grown for local consumption here; helping farmers reach their land and move produce was one reason for building the cable car.
That changes how to approach a visit. Follow permitted public paths, leave gates and crops alone, and give people moving equipment or harvests room to pass. You can appreciate how the land is used without stepping into a plot to improve a photograph.

One journey and a return ticket are different purchases
On 15 October 2026, the municipal ticket page listed a normal single journey at €3 and two journeys, out and back, at €5, sold on site. Discounted categories have separate conditions. These are the published prices checked for this guide; the ticket office is the place to confirm what applies to your party.
A single ticket makes sense only if the rest of your journey is deliberately arranged. The existence of walking paths on a map does not make an unplanned climb a suitable substitute for the return cable car. This guide does not assess those trails or establish their current status.
Agree the return before going down
At the upper station, ask about the day’s service, breaks, the last permitted descent and final return. Photograph the current notice if there is one. A closing time and the latest sensible time to start your visit are not necessarily the same thing, particularly if there is a queue.
If you are visiting by taxi or on an organised excursion, use the same conversation to settle the pickup point and the time allowed below. “Achadas da Cruz stop” can mean a viewpoint visit; it does not establish that a descent is included. The official tourism listing helps identify the cable car and its destination.
Give the stop a place in your west-coast day
Choose whether the fajã or the Porto Moniz pools is the main reason for the journey. Trying to give both the same afternoon while also collecting viewpoints leaves little room for waiting, a meal or an interesting conversation.
For the drive, use our Madeira driving guide and check the actual approach to the station, rather than navigating only to the parish name. Take water and whatever you need for your time below before entering the cabin. This is a rewarding place to slow down, provided the return is already settled.
Ticket information and destination checked on 15 October 2026. Operating conditions must be confirmed with the station on the day.
