Use the current menu to establish what the quoted price buys: the food selection, tea, any optional drinks and any supplements. Tell the hotel about dietary requirements before reserving. Do not assume that a menu modification can be arranged after you sit down, or that champagne pictured in a promotional photograph is included in the standard booking.
This is a sensible option to investigate when you want the afternoon to revolve around one reserved experience. Avoid scheduling a tightly timed island tour immediately beforehand; an afternoon tea loses much of its appeal if you arrive checking your watch.

Palheiro Gardens lists a tea house serving snacks and lunch, while Casa Velha do Palheiro describes its position within the gardens. This is a different starting point: you can plan the garden visit and then decide how much of the afternoon to spend at the table.
Ask about the current afternoon-tea offer if that is specifically what you want. A tea house being open for lunch does not, by itself, confirm a set afternoon-tea menu, a reserved table or garden admission within the meal price. Establish those details together, including the garden’s last-entry time.
The journey matters here too. Palheiro is above the city, so compare the route from your accommodation rather than treating it as another stop beside Funchal’s waterfront. If using public transport, check your return before sitting down for a long meal.
Compare the whole afternoon
A useful comparison has four parts: the bill for your group, travel, any separate admission, and how you want to spend your time. A lower menu price can stop being the cheaper outing once transport and tickets are included. Conversely, a garden-and-tea afternoon may offer exactly the kind of unhurried outing you wanted.

PortoBay Serra Golf offers a third format: tea in the hotel lounge at Santo da Serra, with scones, cakes and jams. The hotel’s experience page listed €12.50 per person and required a reservation when checked on 2 October 2026. Confirm the current menu and price directly before booking. This is an upland outing with its own transport needs, rather than a substitute for a short walk to a Funchal café.
