Eira do Serrado and Curral das Freiras give you two different experiences of the same valley. The viewpoint shows the mountain setting from above; visiting the village brings you to its streets, church and places to eat. Choose whether you want one or both before arranging transport.
The view is not the village visit
Eira do Serrado is a viewpoint above Curral das Freiras. Visit Madeira places it at roughly 1,095 metres. A photo stop there does not mean your excursion will also descend into the village. Read the itinerary or tell your driver exactly which stops you want.
Visibility matters to the viewpoint part of the outing. If cloud obscures the valley, you may prefer to put more of the visit into the village rather than wait for a photograph that the weather might never offer. Neither decision needs a guarantee of clear mountain views.

What to do at village level
Use the centre as the focus: a walk, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Livramento when accessible, and a meal or small food stop. The official village guide identifies chestnut-based delicacies as part of the local food tradition.
Ask what is actually on today’s menu. Chestnut cake, soup or a sweet are different ways to try the ingredient, and availability depends on the place. Do not arrive expecting a festival menu on an ordinary weekday. If you want lunch rather than a tasting stop, allow time for a full service.
Arrange the two journeys together
For a taxi visit, agree the stops, waiting arrangement and return before setting off. For public transport, check the current operator timetable for each place: a service to the village should not be assumed to serve the viewpoint as well. Avoid treating the line between them on a map as an easy walk without checking the actual route.
A tour can remove the need to organise separate journeys. The current Curral das Freiras outing listed by Flora Travel Madeira includes Eira do Serrado and the village, with a stated duration of 3.5 hours and Funchal hotel pickup. Food and drinks are excluded. Check your pickup area and whether the village stop leaves enough time for the meal you want.

Leave the bigger mountain itinerary for another day
A visit to Curral can be a satisfying outing without attaching Pico do Areeiro to it. If a mountain sunrise is another priority, our explanation of Madeira’s driving distances helps you think about the separate road journeys.
For travelling from Funchal without hiring a car, the car-free planning guide discusses the difference between a bus destination and a whole excursion. Here, the practical distinction is simple: reaching Curral and seeing it from Eira do Serrado are not the same booking.
