Machico works well as an afternoon with one main aim: spend time by the bay, walk into the centre and have a meal before heading back. You do not need to add Santana and a mountain stop to make the outing worthwhile. The first choice is which part of the waterfront you want to use.
The sand and the pebbles are different beaches
Banda d’Além is the golden-sand beach beside the mouth of Ribeira de Machico. Its sand was imported from Morocco. São Roque occupies another stretch of the bay and has the pebbles more typical of Madeira’s coastline. Both are in Machico; photographs of one should not set your expectations for the other.
Visit Madeira identifies changing facilities, showers and seasonal lifeguard provision at Banda d’Além, and describes supporting facilities at São Roque. Seasonal supervision should not be assumed for an October visit. Check the signs and conditions on arrival.
Let the beach decide the order
If swimming is the reason for coming, start there while you still have time to change and relax. If you mainly want to see the town, walk first and treat the waterfront as a pause. A beach bag, wet clothes and a sit-down lunch are easier to manage if you have decided where the change of clothes will happen.
Keep an alternative that does not depend on entering the water. Looking across the bay and walking through the centre still gives the visit a purpose when swimming conditions are unsuitable. Stay within permitted areas and avoid turning a beach photograph into a judgement about the sea that day.
Lunch without a restaurant guessing game
Choose a current menu and location before deciding that a particular restaurant fits. Check whether it serves lunch on your date and whether your group needs a reservation. For a short afternoon, a table near the route you are already taking can be more useful than a recommendation far outside the centre.
If the menu offers espetada, ask about the portion and accompaniments rather than assuming one skewer feeds a fixed number of people. Our espetada guide explains how to organise the order for the table. Dietary requirements need a direct answer from the kitchen.
Keep your return simple
With a car, check the parking arrangements for your chosen waterfront area. With a bus, confirm the stop and the return service before leaving Funchal; do not rely on the outward bus number alone. A beach stop that ends after the last useful return is a different outing from the one you planned.
Machico is also discussed in our accommodation-area guide, but choosing to visit for an afternoon does not require moving your base. Give the bay and centre the time you came for, then save the rest of the east coast for a separate day.
