Porto Moniz has a paid natural-pool complex and another free-access bathing area beside Cachalote. They are different places, with different entrances and facilities. Before following a map pin labelled simply “natural pools”, decide whether you want the managed complex or the older pools near the aquarium.
The paid complex
The municipal description lists changing facilities, a supporting bar, first aid, lifeguards and equipment available to hire at the Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools. This is the space to investigate if those facilities are part of your plan rather than optional extras.
On 6 October 2026, the municipality’s published tariff listed €3 per entry for visitors over three years old, with younger children free and separate concessions. It listed winter opening as 09:00–17:00 and summer opening as 09:00–19:00. Confirm the applicable season, opening and conditions before travelling: a published annual timetable is not a promise that the complex can open in any sea state.
Aquário and Cachalote: the other pools
The municipality also identifies Piscinas Naturais do Aquário and describes the Cachalote pools beside the restaurant of that name as free access. Use the official Cachalote page to match the place to your map.

Free entry does not mean the facilities listed for the paid complex exist here too. If you need changing rooms, support for a particular mobility requirement or somewhere for young children to swim, confirm the actual space you intend to use. Do not transfer a description from one pool to the other.
Make swimming a decision on arrival
Look at the conditions and follow the signs and staff instructions for that day. Water circulating through volcanic pools does not remove the influence of the ocean. If bathing is restricted, keep the visit to an allowed viewpoint or seafront route instead of moving to another pool to bypass the restriction.
Bring what you need to change and dry off, and decide how long you want in the water before building a drive around it. A pool stop between several attractions feels quite different from an afternoon devoted to swimming.
A tour stop is not a pool ticket
A west-coast excursion can bring you to Porto Moniz, but check its stopping time, entry charges and whether bathing is part of the plan. One current option is the Skywalk, Porto Moniz, Seixal and Fanal 4WD tour. Treat it as a wider sightseeing day, not a dedicated swimming transfer.
