A day trip to Porto Santo can make sense if you want one focused island day and the sailings give you enough time for it. It is less convincing when the idea is to see every attraction, spend hours on the beach and return without feeling the transport. Calculate the time ashore before deciding what the ticket is worth to you.
Count the day from leaving your accommodation
Use Porto Santo Line’s official website to check the departures for your date, journey information and current notices. Add the journey to Funchal’s terminal, the required check-in time, the crossing and onward travel after arrival. Repeat that calculation for the return.
The operator displayed a notice of longer crossings when checked on 2 October 2026. That is a reason to consult the live information; it should not be turned into a permanent journey duration in an evergreen itinerary.
Once you have the timings, subtract the transfers and return check-in from the available time. What remains is the time you can actually use on Porto Santo, rather than the gap between the arrival and departure printed on a timetable.
Give the day one main purpose
If the beach is the reason, choose where you will go, how to reach it and where to eat nearby. If you want a sightseeing excursion, compare its start and end against the ferry arrangements. Combining the two is possible only when the details leave you time for both.
For an independent visit, the port and the place you want to spend the day are different points. Check the transfer rather than assuming the ferry delivers you directly to your chosen beach or lunch table.
The operator’s one-day-cruise page describes different package arrangements. Read the inclusions: a ferry ticket, a transfer package and an excursion package are not interchangeable purchases.

Compare the full bill
Use the fare applicable to you, with any current surcharges and chosen extras. An offer aimed at Madeira residents may not be the price available to an international visitor. Check age categories and the actual booking total before comparing the day trip with another day on Madeira.
Add food and the transport needed on Porto Santo. If travelling as a family, check whether a package price is per adult, per person or based on a particular group arrangement.
When one night is worth considering
Staying overnight changes the visit: you can plan an evening and a following morning without building both around a same-day return. It also adds accommodation, luggage arrangements and a second day’s timetable to check. Price those together instead of assuming the extra night is either negligible or automatically expensive.
For a short Madeira holiday, the choice is also about what you leave out. If you mainly want mountains and forest walks, a long ferry day may compete with your priorities. If a sandy-beach day is central to the holiday, it may be precisely the contrast you wanted. Choose on that basis, then confirm the sailing.
The guide to reaching Madeira helps separate the journey to the archipelago from travel between the islands. Compare the day trip with your plans for a week in Madeira before taking a full day out of the main-island itinerary.
